L\u00edmita con el oc\u00e9ano Atl\u00e1ntico al oeste, con Senegal al suroeste, con Mal\u00ed al este y al sureste, con Argelia al noreste, y con la Rep\u00fablica \u00c1rabe Saharaui Democr\u00e1tica (territorio no controlado por Marruecos) al norte y noroeste. La capital y mayor ciudad del pa\u00eds es Nuakchot, situada en la costa del oc\u00e9ano Atl\u00e1ntico.<\/p>\n<p>Las fuerzas francesas, que fueron remontando el r\u00edo Senegal, convirtieron el territorio en protectorado franc\u00e9s en 1903, y en 1920 en colonia perteneciente al \u00c1frica Occidental Francesa. En 1946 Mauritania se convirti\u00f3 en un territorio de ultramar de la Uni\u00f3n Francesa. Durante el periodo en que perteneci\u00f3 al Imperio Franc\u00e9s, se aboli\u00f3 legalmente la esclavitud,<\/p>\n<p>El 28 de noviembre de 1958 se proclam\u00f3 la Rep\u00fablica Isl\u00e1mica de Mauritania, bajo la Constituci\u00f3n de la V Rep\u00fablica Francesa, y el 28 de noviembre de 1960 Mauritania adquiri\u00f3 la plena independencia.
